Born in Macau in 1989, Kuok-Wai Lio began his piano studies at the age of five. In 1997, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under Wang Nan, and with Gabriel Kwok since 2000. He entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 2006, where he is a student of Gary Graffman. He has performed in masterclasses given by Emanuel Ax, Richard Goode, Robert Levin, Murray Perahia and Krystian Zimerman. He is invited to study with Andras Schiff at the 2010 International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove, U.K. and in his workshop in Lucerne. He will be attending the Yale School of Music in Fall 2010, as a student of Peter Frankl and Boris Berman.
Lio was awarded first prize in 2007 International Fulbright Concerto Competition for Pianists, first prize in the 2005 Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Competition in Salt Lake City, gold prize and Yoda (special) prize in the Sixth International Chopin Piano Competition of Asia in Tokyo, second prize at the Third Seiler International Piano Competition for Young Pianist in Germany and third prize in the Fifth Tchaikovsky International Competition for Young Musicians in Japan.
He has performed as a soloist in various cities in China, Japan, Germany, Italy and the United States, and has collaborated with the Macau Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, China Philharmonic, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, Curtis Chamber Orchestra, Russian Symphony Orchestra and Camerata Salzburg. He was the young-artist-in-residence at the 2007 Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival in Florida. He will be spending this summer in the Marlboro and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festivals.
